Vigorous writing is concise. A centence should contain no unneccessary words, a paragraph no unneccessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no uneccessary lines and a machine no uneccessary parts. This require not that the writer make all the sentences short or avoid all detail and treat subjects only in outline, but that every word tell.
